Defection & Indian Politics in 21st Century

Abstract

Defection, often termed as “political horse-trading,” has remained a persistent challenge in Indian politics. This paper examines the phenomenon of defection in the 21st century, highlighting its causes, implications, and measures taken to curb it. Through a detailed analysis of case studies, including high-profile instances of defections in state assemblies and Parliament, the paper illustrates the systemic vulnerabilities exploited by political actors. Legislative measures like the Anti-Defection Law (Tenth Schedule) are critically evaluated for their effectiveness. The paper employs a mixed-method approach, using primary and secondary data, supplemented by chart representations to elucidate trends and patterns. In order to prevent defections, it concludes by offering suggestions for bolstering democratic norms in India.
