Protective effect of dietary Carica papaya leaf on heamato- biochemical and oxidative stress in lead intoxicated Oreochromis mosssambicus

Abstract

The present study investigated the potential protective role of Carica papaya leaf in lead-induced toxicity in Oreochromis mossambicus. The effect of lead exposure at 0.8, 0.6, and 0.4 mg/ml in O. mossambicus for 30 days indicated modulation in growth, level of antioxidants and haematological parameters. The antagonistic effect of C. papaya leaf was analysed in different tissues such as liver, gill and kidney. Lead exposed fish showed a significant (p<0.05) damage in terms of growth, antioxidants viz. catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase and blood parameters such as red blood cell count, white blood cell count, platelet count, haemoglobin and packed cell volume. The levels of all these parameters were significantly (P<0.05) improved by the supplementation of fish feed containg C. papaya leaves extract. Tssue analysis of liver, gill and kidney also revealed the protective effect of C. papaya leaves exposed to higher concentration (0.8 mg/mL) of lead acetate. Therefore the C. papaya leaf extract can be used as an antagonistic dietary supplement against lead ediated oxidative stress in aquaculture.
