Knowledge and awareness of Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) among homoeopathic practitioners: A cross-sectional survey from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

Abstract

Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) is a statutory responsibility of medical practitioners in India and is essential for generating accurate mortality statistics for public health planning. This cross sectional descriptive study assesses the knowledge and awareness of MCCD among Homoeopathic practitioners in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. A structured closed-ended online questionnaire based on MCCD guidelines, ICD-10 standards, and the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 was administered to 50 BHMS graduates and MD (Hom) scholars. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed satisfactory awareness of legal reporting timelines, ethical practices, and the appropriate use of MCCD forms. However, gaps were identified in understanding the structural sequence of cause of death, ICD-related responsibilities, and documentation practices. The findings emphasize the need for focussed training and curriculum reinforcement to enhance the accuracy and quality of death certification among Homoeopathic practitioners.
