Nutritional and functional properties of fruit crops: A comprehensive review
Abstract
Fruit crops play a vital role in human nutrition and global food security due to their rich composition of essential nutrients and bioactive compounds. They are significant sources of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and water that support normal physiological functions and overall health. Beyond basic nutrition, fruits contain phytochemicals such as polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids and anthocyanins with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These bioactive components help reduce the risk of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, obesity and certain cancers. Regular fruit consumption is associated with improved immune response, digestive health and metabolic balance. The nutritional and functional qualities of fruits are influenced by genetic factors, cultivation practices and postharvest handling. Advances in food science and biotechnology continue to enhance the health benefits and value added potential of fruit based products, highlighting the importance of improving fruit production, quality and processing to meet future nutritional and food security needs.
