Homoeopathic management in the treatment of tonsilitis - A case report

Abstract

Tonsillitis remains a significant clinical problem in otorhinolaryngology, particularly in the paediatric population, due to its high prevalence, recurrent course, and associated complications. The palatine tonsils are specialized lymphoid organs forming an integral part of Waldeyer’s ring and play a crucial role in mucosal immunity during early childhood. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the embryology, anatomy, physiology, etiology, pathology, clinical features, and complications of tonsillitis. Conventional management strategies, including antimicrobial therapy and tonsillectomy, are reviewed. A case report of a 5-year-old child with recurrent tonsillitis and Grade IV tonsillar enlargement, previously advised for tonsillectomy, is presented. Individualized homoeopathic management led to marked symptomatic relief and reduction in tonsillar size in one month, suggesting a potential role for conservative therapeutic approaches in selected cases. Brodsky grading scale of Tonsilitis was used for assessment.
