Effect of different media composition on root and shoot growth and survivability of Mint (Mentha arvensis L.) cutting

Abstract

The present experiment entitled “Effect of different media composition on root and shoot growth and survivability of Mint (Mentha arvensis L.) cutting” was conducted during the year 2024-25 at Department of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, College of Horticulture and Research Station, Sankara, Patan, Durg (C.G.). A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used for statistical analysis of data, which consisted of 07 treatments and replicated thrice. The results revealed that media enriched with organic manures significantly improved all growth parameters compared to the control. The treatment T6 (Vermicompost + Poultry manure + Soil + Sand) (1:1:1:1) resulted in the earliest sprouting in (10.5 days), maximum shoot number (4.6), number of leaves (15.2), longest shoot length (21.6 cm), highest shoot diameter (4.7 mm) and the maximum leaf size. Similarly survival percentage was highest in T6 (88%). Rooting characteristics also improved significantly in enriched media. T6 recorded the highest rooting percentage (86%), number of primary roots (10.4), longest primary root (20.1 cm), and maximum secondary roots (30). Therefore, combined media of Vermicompost, Poultry manure, Soil and Sand at 1:1:1:1 is suitable for the root and shoot growth of cutting of Mint.
