A study to assess the efficiency of Antimicrobial Dressings in the Management of Superficial Abscesses

Abstract

Background: The superficial abscesses are the problem when managing the wound because of the risk of infection and wound dehiscence. Antimicrobial dressings have been developed as an intervention that may improve wound healing and also reduce levels of microbial colonization. Objective: The effectiveness of the use of an antimicrobial dressing in the treatment of superficial abscesses with an emphasis on the rate of healing, quality of the wound control, patient comfort and cost efficiency is discussed in this study. Methods: A quassia experimental study was carried out at the Pune, India sixty patients treated for superficial abscess. Patients received silver-based, iodine-impregnated, honey-based and chlorhexidine dressings and healing rates, infection control and patient satisfaction were determined. Analysed by both descriptive and inferential statistics was the dressing effectiveness. Results: Silver dressings showed the fastest healing and best infection rate (99% reduction of bacterial load). Chlorhexidine dressings demonstrated robust antimicrobial activity and were honey- based dressings that presented natural antibacterial properties with excellent patient tolerance. Cost efficiency analysis showed that although effective, silver dressings were more costly than iodine and honey?based treatments. Conclusion: Antimicrobial dressings enhance healing and reduce infection in superficial abscess care. When choosing the type of dressing to use, clinicians need to weigh clinical effectiveness, patient comfort and cost. More research is also required to investigate long-term outcomes and access to antimicrobial dressings in a range of healthcare environments.
