Effects of core strength training and Yogasana practices on psychological outcomes of school students

Abstract

The aim of this study to examined the effect of 12-week core strength training program and a yogasana practices intervention on selected psychological parameters specifically achievement motivation, attitude toward yoga, and study habits in school-aged adolescents. 195 students whose age 15-19 years were randomly assigned to a Core Strength Training Group (CRG), a Yogasana Practices Group (YG), or a Control Group (CG). From there 65 subjects were randomly select for per group. The Core Strength Group performed progressive resistance core exercises with own body weight, the Yogasana Practices Group practiced hatha yoga postures, and the Control group maintained normal activity. Pre- and post-intervention tests measured achievement motivation, attitude toward yoga, and study habits. Data were analyzed by ANCOVA controlling for baseline. Both the Core Strength Training Group and Yogasana Practices Group showed significant improvements in achievement motivation and study habits compared to Control Group (p<.05). The Yogasana Practices Group also showed a marked increase in positive yoga attitude, whereas the Core Strength Group showed little change in yoga attitude. These results suggest that structured Core Strength Training and Yogasana Practices can bolster adolescent motivation and study behaviours, with yoga particularly enhancing attitudes toward the practice. The findings support incorporating exercise and yogasana into school programs to promote student well-being and academic engagement.
