Venous blood gas analysis of male Barbari goat

Abstract

The body maintains a delicate balance between acids and bases to keep blood pH within a narrow physiological range, despite the continuous production of metabolic byproducts. This homeostasis is essential for optimal enzyme activity and for maintaining appropriate concentrations of ionized (biologically active) electrolytes, such as Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺. These factors directly influence the rate of metabolic reactions and the function of transmembrane transport systems. Blood gas analysis provides information on three primary physiological parameters: oxygenation, ventilation, and acid-base status. In addition, blood gas measurements may be used to evaluate blood glucose, electrolyte concentrations, ionized calcium, and lactate levels. In veterinary medicine, acid-base disorders are common and are frequently associated with conditions such as diarrhea, vomiting, renal insufficiency, dehydration, anesthesia, pneumonia, and diseases that limit pulmonary expansion. The present study was carried out on 06 clinically healthy male Barabari goats of age between 1 to 2 Years. Venous blood samples from jugular vein were collected in heparinized (1:1000) disposable syringes and each sample was analyzed in triplicate by using the instrument HDC Lyte Plus. The Mean ± SE value PCO2, PO2, HCO3 and pH was observed 30.61667±2.44, 38.03±0.30, 29.07±0.26, and 7.53±0.02 respectively.
