A study on haematological changes induced by 2-aminopyridine in male Wistar rats
Abstract
2-Aminopyridine (2-AP) is an organic compound widely used as an intermediate in the manufacture of several pharmaceutical agents and is recognized as a potential occupational health hazard. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the haematological alterations induced by repeated oral administration of 2-aminopyridine in male Wistar rats. A total of twenty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four equal groups. Group I served as the control and received distilled water, while Groups II, III, and IV were administered 2-aminopyridine orally at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg body weight, respectively, for 28 consecutive days. At the end of the treatment period, blood samples were collected and subjected to haematological analysis. The results revealed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in total leukocyte count (TLC) in treated groups compared to the control group. Additionally, a significant (p < 0.05) increase in lymphocyte count was observed in all treated groups in a dose-dependent manner. These findings indicate that subacute exposure to 2-aminopyridine induces marked haematological alterations, suggesting its potential immunomodulatory and toxic effects.
