First record of the jumping spider Phintelloides undulatus (Caleb and Karthikeyani, 2015) from Sultanpur National Park, Haryana, India

Abstract

The jumping spider Phintelloides undulatus (Araneae: Salticidae), an Indian endemic, is recorded for the first time from the state of Haryana, northern India, based on a single adult male collected from Sultanpur National Park, Gurugram district. This record represents a significant northward range extension of approximately 1,100 km from the previously northernmost confirmed localities in Gujarat. Species identification was confirmed through detailed morphological examination, particularly of the male pedipalp and diagnostic colour pattern of the carapace and abdomen, which agree well with published redescriptions. The present finding substantially expands the known distribution of P. undulatus beyond peninsular India, highlighting the limited state of arachnological exploration in the Indo-Gangetic plains. Continued faunistic surveys in northern India are likely to reveal additional undocumented populations and further range extensions of poorly known salticid spiders.
