Kālidāsa’s vision of nature: An aesthetic and literary study

Abstract

Kālidāsa’s poetry reveals a profound and sensitive vision of nature, where the natural world is not a mere backdrop but an active participant in human experience. This study examines Kālidāsa’s aesthetic treatment of nature through select works, highlighting how landscapes, seasons, flora, and fauna are intricately woven into emotional, philosophical, and narrative contexts. Drawing upon the principles of Sanskrit aesthetics, especially rasa and dhvani, the paper explores how nature serves as a medium for expressing love, separation, devotion, and harmony between humans and the cosmos. Kālidāsa’s portrayal reflects a deep ecological consciousness and a holistic worldview rooted in Indian literary tradition.
