Therapeutic role of homoeopathy in cerebrovascular accident: A case-based analysis

Abstract

Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) is a major neurological condition associated with significant morbidity, often resulting in motor, sensory, and speech impairments that affect functional independence and quality of life. Early rehabilitation and a comprehensive therapeutic approach are crucial for optimal recovery and prevention of long-term disability. This paper presents a case of post-cerebrovascular accident with a sub-acute infarct involving the left corona radiata and basal ganglion in a 60-year-old female with a background of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension, who presented with right-sided hemiplegia and dysarthria. The patient was managed using an integrative therapeutic approach comprising conventional medical care, structured physiotherapy and speech therapy, along with individualized homoeopathic treatment based on detailed case taking and repertorisation. Initial repertorial analysis indicated Rhus toxicodendron, followed by Causticum as the chronic remedy based on symptom evolution. Neurological status was periodically assessed using the NIH Stroke Scale, which demonstrated progressive improvement over an eight-week follow-up period. Marked recovery was observed in motor strength, gait, speech clarity, and functional independence, culminating in independent short-distance ambulation and near-normal speech. This case highlights the significance of individualized and integrative therapeutic strategies in enhancing recovery and functional outcomes in post-CVA patients.
