Biochemical resistance/susceptibility to pulse beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis L.) in green gram of different genotypes

Abstract

The laboratory experiments were conducted to study the biochemical associated with resistance/susceptibility to Callosobruchus chinensis in green gram varieties viz., DSPS 6-13, CD 6-52, D-SPS-6, SPS-6-10, BM-2003-2, CD 6-53 and BM-2002-1 under laboratory conditions at the Post Graduate Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Entomology, College of Agriculture, Latur during 2023-2024. The growth index values of C. chinensis varied significantly when reared on different green gram varieties. The highest growth index (2.47) was recorded on green gram variety BM-2002-1 and lowest growth index (1.78) was recorded in green gram variety SPS-6-10. The highest adult emergence (72.00 percent) was observed on BM-2002-1 and lowest adult emergence was recorded in SPS-6-10 (58 percent). The highest adult emergence in male (35.00 percent) was recorded in BM-2002-1 which was at par with D-SPS-6 (33 percent) and CD 6-52 (33 percent). In female highest adult emergence was observed in BM-2002-1 (37 percent) which was at par with CD 6-52 (37 percent) and DSPS 6-13 (36 percent). The sex ratio of C. chinensis varied significantly when reared on different green gram varieties . The highest sex ratio of C. chinensis was registered in SPS 6-10 (1:1.14) and lowest sex ratio was observed in BM-2002-1 (1:1.05), D-SPS-6 (1:1.09) and SPS-6-10 (1:1.10). The highest amount of protein was recorded in BM-2002-1(94.08 mg/g) and the lowest amount of total protein were observed in SPS-6-10 (54.32 mg/g). The highest amount of carbohydrate was recorded in DSPS6-13 (3.53 mg/g) and lowest amount of carbohydrate was noticed in CD6-52 (0.64 mg/g). The highest amount of phenol was recorded in CD6-52 (1.73 mg/gm) and lowest amount of phenol was observed in BM-2002-1 (0.69 mg/g). Highest number of flavonoids was recorded in SPS-6-10 (0.232 mg/g) and lowest amount of flavonoids was observed in BM-2002-1 (0.165 mg/g). In conclusion it is to state that compared to all varieties used in the current study SPS-6-10 was least susceptible among all the varieties which might be due to lower protein and carbohydrate and higher phenol and flavonoids content present in it.
