Rare developmental ovarian anomaly in a cat and its surgical retrieval: A case report

Abstract

Congenital abnormalities of the feline reproductive tract are rare, with ovarian agenesis being one of the least frequently reported conditions. This case report describes a 1.5-year-old domestic shorthair cat presented for routine ovariohysterectomy, during which unilateral ovarian agenesis was incidentally discovered. Preoperative evaluation, including physical examination, laboratory tests, and abdominal ultrasonography, revealed no abnormalities. Surgical exploration showed a normal left ovary and uterine horn, while the right uterine horn was present but the right ovary was completely absent, confirming isolated unilateral ovarian agenesis. Standard OVH was performed, and postoperative management included analgesics, antibiotics, and daily wound care. The cat recovered uneventfully without complications. This case highlights the rarity of unilateral ovarian agenesis in cats, the importance of careful intraoperative examination for accurate diagnosis, and the value of documenting such anomalies to enhance understanding of feline reproductive developmental disorders.
