Advances in production and improvement of carrot (Daucus carota L.): A review

Abstract

Carrot (Daucus carota L.) is a globally important root vegetable valued for its high nutritional content, especially β-carotene (provitamin A), dietary fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. India stands among the major carrot producers, with significant cultivation in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Meghalaya. Carrot production faces challenges in seed quality, biotic/abiotic stresses, nutrient and water management, and post-harvest losses. Advances in agronomy, breeding, biotechnology, pest management, and precision agriculture have significantly enhanced carrot production. This review summarizes recent progress, with an emphasis on Indian research and context, and provides recommendations for future research and development.
