The role of insects in crop pollination

Abstract

Insect pollination represents a critical ecological service that underpins agricultural productivity across diverse cropping systems worldwide. This research investigated the contribution of various insect pollinators to crop pollination efficiency in major agricultural crops grown under Indian conditions. Field observations were conducted across six major crop categories including oilseeds, fruits, vegetables, and pulses. Pollinator diversity, visitation frequency, and pollination effectiveness were assessed using standardized protocols. Results indicated that honeybees (Apis cerana and Apis mellifera) contributed 45.2% to 72.8% of total pollination services depending on crop type. Wild bees including Xylocopa, Megachile, and Halictus species accounted for 15.6% to 35.7% of pollination activity. Other insect groups such as butterflies, flies, and beetles contributed the remaining 11.6% to 25.4%. Pollinator visitation showed distinct seasonal patterns with peak activity during March to June coinciding with major flowering periods. Oilseed crops particularly mustard and sunflower showed highest dependence on honeybee pollination while fruit crops demonstrated greater reliance on wild bee species. The research established that maintaining pollinator diversity rather than depending solely on managed honeybee colonies provides more resilient pollination services. Findings suggest that integrated pollinator management combining habitat conservation with managed bee populations can enhance crop yields by 23.7% to 41.3% compared to pollinator-excluded controls. These results have significant implications for sustainable agricultural practices and food security in the region.
