Evaluating Eichhornia-based feeds: Nutritional and economic implications for Labeo rohita growth and health

Abstract

The potential of Eichhornia-based leaf protein concentrate (ELPC) as an alternative protein source to groundnut oil cake (GNOC) in the formulated diet of rohu (Labeo rohita) was assessed. Five iso-nitrogenous diets (30% CP) were formulated, replacing GNOC with ELPC at different proportions in triplicate: Control (0% ELPC), T1 (25% ELPC), T2 (50% ELPC), T3 (75% ELPC), and T4 (100% ELPC). Feeding trials on rohu were conducted for a period of 60 days, maintaining stocking densities at 1g/L in a completely randomized design. Fish were fed at 10% of body weight for the first 30 days and 8% thereafter. Proximate analysis of raw ingredients, formulated feed, and carcass composition was conducted to assess the growth performance, water quality, genotoxicity, and feed economics at suitable intervals of time.
