Surgical management of nasal granuloma in buffalo and HF cross cattle
Abstract
A 3 years old buffalo and 5 years HF cross cattle were presented with a history of unilateral nasal bleeding since 2 months and gradually increase growth from one nose to another nose since 4 months in buffalo and cattle, respectively. On clinical examination, proliferative growth occluding the left nostril in buffalo and both nostril in HF cross cattle with nasal bleeding was observed. The proptosis of left eye and maxillary swelling was also present with difficulty in respiration and feeding in buffalo. Soft tissue opacity in nasal sinus was evident on radiography and cases were diagnosed as nasal granuloma causing pressure induced proptosis of eyeball and maxillary swelling in buffalo, while no maxillary swelling was observed in HF Cattle. The growth was surgically excised by nasal trephination in the buffalo and by direct resection in the HF cattle. Both animals were sedated with Xylazine at a dose rate of 0.1 mg/kg body weight administered intramuscularly. In the buffalo, general anaesthesia was induction and maintenance with double drip solution of 5% guaiphenesin and Ketamine @ 1 mg/kg body weight intravenous to effect and restraint in lateral recumbency with affect portion uppermost. Furthermore, 2% lignocaine was locally infiltrated at the surgical site in the buffalo to ensure adequate desensitization prior to excision. In the cattle, regional anaesthesia was achieved through infraorbital nerve block using 2% lignocaine in standing position. The histopathological study of growth was performed which revealed newly abundant formed connective tissue with thinned wall capillaries. Infiltration of fibroblast and eosinophil cells along with epithelium hyperplasia suggestive of nasal granuloma. Postoperatively both animals showed uneventful recovery with normal feeding and watering as well as relief from respiratory distress.
