An analysis of livelihood security of pomegranate growers under National Horticulture Mission (NHM) in Karnataka

Abstract

The present study was conducted to analyze the economic performance of pomegranate growers under National Horticulture Mission (NHM). The overall beneficiaries were found to have average livelihood level of about 41.66 per cent in both Chikkaballapura and Chitradurga districts. Further the overall non-beneficiaries was found to had average livelihood level of about 35.00 per cent in both the districts. Nearly 38.33 per cent of overall beneficiaries had average level of food security and 39.17 per cent of the overall beneficiaries belonged to the average level of economic security. About half of (50.00 per cent) of the overall beneficiaries belonged to the average level of health security, overall 38.33 per cent of the belonged to the average level of social security, 42.50 per cent of the overall with average level of ecological security. About 66.67 per cent of the overall respondents were average level of psychological security, 42.50 per cent of the overall belonged to the average level of physical security and 41.67 per cent of the overall of belonged to the average level of educational security. Nearly 20.83 per cent overall non-beneficiaries have average level of food security, 23.33 per cent of the overall beneficiaries belonged to the average level of economic security. Totally of 18.33 per cent of the overall respondents belonged to the better level of health security, 18.33 per cent of the overall of them belonged to the average level of social security, about 20.00 per cent of the overall with average level of ecological security, about 21.67 per cent of the respondents overall of were average level of psychological security, 21.67 per cent of the overall belonged to the average level of physical security. About 21.67 per cent of the overall respondents belonged to the average level of educational security. The findings highlighted the importance of improving livelihood security dimensions and outreach efforts for to increase their participation and get benefit from NHM and improve their livelihood standards for better scheme implementation and spread of positive impact of the NHM.
