Study on uterine hemodynamics in canine pyometra

Abstract

The present study evaluated clinical, ultrasonographic, and Doppler hemodynamic alterations in canine pyometra during medical management protocols. Eighteen pyometra-affected dogs were randomly allotted into Group I (Mifepristone + Misoprostol), Group II (Aglepristone + Misoprostol), and Group III (Mifepristone + Cabergoline), each comprising six animals. Clinical parameters, haematology, serum biochemistry, B-mode ultrasonography, and uterine artery Doppler velocimetry were assessed on days 0, 7 and 14. Vaginal discharge (81%), anorexia (65%), lethargy (52%), and vomiting (42%) were the predominant clinical signs. Markedly distended uterine horns and thickened walls were characteristic findings. Group II demonstrated the most rapid reduction in uterine lumen diameter (2.27±0.29 cm to 0.16±0.16 cm) and uterine wall thickness (0.28±0.06 cm to 0.02±0.02 cm). Doppler indices (PSV, EDV, RI, PI, S/D) were markedly altered on day 0, reflecting inflammation-associated hyperemia and vasodilation of the uterine artery, and significantly normalised across all groups by day 14. Doppler ultrasound served as a sensitive diagnostic tool for monitoring treatment response in canine pyometra.
