Management of Reticular Abscess in buffalo via Ultrasound Guided Transcutaneous Drainage

Abstract

Abscess formation adjacent to reticulum is considered as one of the sequelae of the hardware disease. Some of pre-reticular abscesses are firmly attached to the reticulum and located at or above its ventral floor of the reticulum. These studies comprised of 8 different cases of reticular abscess in buffalo. Major chief complains of affected animals were tympany and inappetence. All cases were diagnosed based on clinical examination and ultrasonography. In three cases ultrasonography guided transcutaneous drainage was performed at the site of reticulum abscess (6-8th ICS). Remaining five buffaloes were subjected to the administration of parenteral antibiotics without drainage due to owner non-compliance for the drainage procedure. Ultrasonographic examination revealed circumscribed hypoechoic structure with well-developed capsule in 2 buffaloes while others cases showed mixed echogenicity. All buffaloes were treated systemically with parenteral Inj. Streptomycin-penicillin (5 gm), Inj. Meloxicam (0.2 mg/kg) and Inj. Chlorpheniramine maleate (0.2 mg/kg) intramuscularly for five days. The buffalo that underwent abscess drainage recovered earlier without any event.
