The new paradigm in pediatric caries management: A comprehensive review of minimally invasive techniques

Abstract

Introduction: Minimally invasive caries treatments in pediatric dentistry are a set of techniques that seek to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible, treat caries lesions in the least aggressive way, and focus on prevention and remineralization. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of minimally invasive treatments in order to identify studies that can provide new scientific evidence. Methodology: A search was conducted in databases using the terms “silver diamine fluoride,” “Hall technique,” “pit and fissure sealant,” and “atraumatic restorative treatment.” Articles from 2020 to 2025 were mainly considered. Results: The Hall technique has established itself as a highly effective and well-tolerated treatment for the management of carious lesions in primary molars. The atraumatic restoration technique is considered a successful treatment in the short and long term; however, its use is limited to patients with a low level of cooperation or where the aim is to preserve dental tissue and perform minimally invasive procedures. Silver diamine fluoride provides remineralizing effects when placed directly on enamel or carious dentin. Pit and fissure sealants are an effective preventive alternative in primary and permanent teeth with incipient lesions. Conclusions: Minimally invasive treatments are used in preventive and restorative procedures against dental caries in its early stages.
