Determination of quercetin content in Moringa oleifera using HPTLC

Abstract

Moringa oleifera, commonly known as the drumstick tree, miracle tree, or Moringa, is a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree native to the Indian subcontinent but now widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world belonging to the family Moringaceae. The leaves of Moringa oleifera are particularly rich in bioactive compounds, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them highly valued in traditional and modern medicine. Quercetin is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonoid found in Moringa oleifera leaves and extracted from its leaves. In the present study, plant leaves were collected from the Ethnoveterinary Herbal Garden at the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India. Quercetin was identified and quantified using a simple, sensitive, and precise High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) method.
