Climate variability, land use change, and ecosystem interactions in a Himalayan mountain system: A conceptual assessment
Abstract
Mountain regions are highly sensitive to climatic variability due to complex topography, fragile ecosystems, and strong dependence of local livelihoods on natural resources. In the Himalayan region, climate variability interacts with land use and land cover changes to influence agricultural productivity, forest condition, wildlife habitats, and water availability. However, many existing studies focus on individual sectors or long-term mean climate trends, often overlooking the interconnected nature of climate-land-ecosystem processes. This study presents a conceptual and synthesis-based assessment of climate variability and land use interactions in a Himalayan mountain system. Using insights from existing literature and secondary data sources, the paper examines how climatic fluctuations and land system changes jointly shape ecosystem responses and human livelihoods. The analysis highlights key pathways through which climate variability influences agricultural and forest systems and emphasizes the need for integrated, multi-sector approaches. The findings provide a foundational understanding that supports more detailed quantitative analyses in subsequent studies and contributes to improved climate adaptation planning in mountain environments.
