Responses of black gram (Vigna mungo L.) to different priming treatments on germination, growth and yield
Abstract
Black gram (Vigna mungo L.) is an important self-pollinated pulse crop belonging to the family Fabaceae. The present study entitled “Responses of Black Gram (Vigna mungo L.) to Different Priming Treatments on Germination, Growth and Yield” was conducted during 2021-22 at Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar. The investigation comprised laboratory experiments to evaluate the effect of different seed priming treatments on seed quality and growth performance of black gram. The laboratory experiment was laid out in a Factorial Completely Randomized Design, with three replications. Two varieties (GU-1 and T-9) and fourteen seed priming treatments involving hydro priming, GA₃, PEG-6000, KH₂PO₄, and salicylic acid were evaluated. Observations on germination and seedling vigour were recorded in the laboratory. Results indicated that seed priming significantly improved germination and seedling vigour, in both varieties compared to the control. Among all treatments, PEG-6000 (7.5%) priming for 1 hour proved most effective, followed by KH₂PO₄ (1.5%) for 1 hour. In variety GU-1, PEG priming resulted in higher germination (87.48%)), root length (6.56 cm), seedling length (16.81 cm), and vigour index-I (7.5). Overall, seed priming with PEG-6000 (7.5%) for 1 hour is recommended for improving seed quality and yield performance of black gram.
