Optimization of nitrogen levels under different microenvironments for enhanced top weight and yield of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata)
Abstract
Optimizing transplanting time, nitrogen management and varietal selection is critical for enhancing cabbage productivity under subtropical conditions. A field experiment was conducted during the rabi seasons of 2017-18 at Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour, to evaluate the effect of transplanting dates, nitrogen levels and varieties on tops weight and yield of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). The experiment conducted in different transplanting dates (29 November, 9 December and 19 December) with three nitrogen levels (125, 150 and 175 kg N ha⁻¹) and three varieties (Golden Acre, Disha and NS 183), laid out in a split-split plot design with three replications. Results revealed that transplanting on 9 December significantly improved tops weight and yield compared to earlier and later transplanting. Application of 175 kg N ha⁻¹ recorded the highest pooled tops weight and yield, while the hybrid variety Disha outperformed Golden Acre and NS 183. The interaction between transplanting dates and varieties was significant for pooled tops weight, indicating varietal sensitivity to planting time. Overall, the combination of 9 December transplanting, 175 kg N ha⁻¹ and variety Disha proved optimum for maximizing cabbage productivity under the agro-climatic conditions of Bihar.
