Evaluation of correlation between serum vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus levels and frequency of complete denture relining/refabrication: A cross-sectional study

International Journal of Applied Dental Sciences · 2025 · Vol. 11(3) · pp. 513–517

Abstract

Background: Continuous bone resorption is the main reason for complete relines/refabrication. Since resorption rates differ between individual, the frequency of required relines also varies. Currently, no reliable predictors exist to identify individuals at risk of frequent relines or refabrications so that prior treatment plans can be modified. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlation between serum Vitamin D, Calcium and Phosphorus levels and frequency of complete denture relining/ refabrication. Material and methods: A sample of thirty-four individuals with complete denture (maxillary/mandibular/both) were included in the study. Data such as name, age, gender along with medical and dental history was recorded. Blood samples were taken to test their serum vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus levels. The data was analyzed using Pearson correlation test. Results: Significant correlation were found between the frequency of relines/refabrication and serum vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus. Among these, serum vitamin D shows the strongest negative correlation, indicating it may have the most substantial influence on the need for denture relines/refabrications. Conclusion: There is a negative correlation between serum vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus levels and frequency of complete denture relining/refabrication. Future studies with increased number of subjects are needed to confirm this correlation and to investigate other bone markers.
