Comparative analysis of retentive property of customized cast metal post and prefabricated glass fiber post: An in-vitro study
Abstract
Background and objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate compare the retention of prefabricated fiber posts to that of customized cast posts. Material and methods: A total of 60 samples of mandibular first premolars were collected and divided into two groups: glass-fiber post (Group 1) and cast metal posts (Group 2) (n=30). The teeth were sectioned 2mm above the cementoenamel junction. A post space of 9mm was drilled for each group and patterns were fabricated with resin for cast post group. These patterns were then casted using nickel-chromium alloy. All the posts were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement before mounting in self-cure acrylic cylinders. A tensile pull-out test was then performed using universal testing machine to test the retention of the samples. The data was recorded and analyzed using independent samples t-test. Results: The bond strength of glass fiber posts were found to be significantly lower than that of customized cast post. Conclusion: Although cast posts were found to have superior retentive properties, glass-fiber posts can be used in conditions that they are indicated in with sufficient bond strength and success rate.
