Minimally invasive management of molar-incisor hypomineralization in anterior teeth: A case report and literature review
Abstract
Background: Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) poses a considerable challenge in pediatric dentistry, particularly when opacities affect the aesthetically critical anterior region. This case report describes the management of such opacities in a young patient using a resin infiltration technique, underscoring its utility within a minimally invasive framework. Case Presentation: A 7-year-old girl was referred for assessment of well-demarcated white opacities on her maxillary central incisors, consistent with MIH. Pertinent history included a strong familial predisposition and recurrent antibiotic use during early childhood. The defects were categorized using the Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization Treatment Need Index. Treatment: A resin infiltration protocol was meticulously performed, involving etching with 15% hydrochloric acid, desiccation with 99% ethanol, and application of a triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA)-based infiltrant. Results: This single, non-invasive procedure yielded an immediate and marked improvement in the teeth's translucency and aesthetic appearance, effectively camouflaging the opacities. The intervention enhanced the patient's smile and provided structural reinforcement to the compromised enamel. Conclusion: Resin infiltration proves to be a highly effective, conservative, and patient-friendly modality for addressing aesthetic concerns associated with MIH in anterior teeth, offering immediate benefits for dental health and patient self-esteem.
