Emergence era of bacteriophage therapy
Abstract
The bacteriophage serves as a promising candidate for treatment of bacterial diseases. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance imparts in re-emergence of bacteriophage therapy. Bacteriophage has gain an image of alternative therapy against bacterial infection especially against the multi drug resistant bacteria. Antimicrobial resistant creates public health hazard and became a serious threat worldwide. Result of antibiotic treatment are not encourages, as lacking of novel antibiotics which would be effective for all types of infection and free from creating antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Now a day due to lacking in drug development pipeline there is a great need of alternative therapy measures. This critical situation has introduced the re-interest in phage therapy. To fight disease, phage therapy employs viruses that specifically target microbes (bacteria) without harming the commensal bacteria. So many researchers have made great efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of phage therapy in different infectious conditions in livestock and poultry. Phage therapy (phage and their lysins) is now become the topic of interest for researchers as a potential antimicrobial substitute. To get rid of emerging issue of antimicrobial resistance bacteriophage has proved his identity as a bio-therapeutic agent. This study covers the implications of bacteriophage for treatment of different bacterial infections in livestock and poultry along with its advantages and disadvantages.
