Surgical retrieval of gravid uterine horn volvulus in a domestic feline: A rare case report

Abstract

A two-year-old primiparous Persian mix female cat. The cat was presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex with a history of anorexia, abdominal distension, and greenish vaginal discharge. Ultrasonography examination revealed the presence of a single dead kitten within the uterus. Based on these findings, an emergency ovariohysterectomy was planned. During laparotomy, a clockwise rotation of the left uterine horn was observed, accompanied by severe hyperaemia and necrosis, indicating unilateral uterine torsion. Two dead kittens were retrieved via caesarean section. After correcting the torsion, an ovariohysterectomy was performed to prevent further complications and save the cat’s life. The postoperative recovery was uneventful. Uterine torsion is a rare obstetrical emergency in queens, often associated with late gestation or dystocia. Prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention are essential for a favourable outcome for the dam.
