Family education status of organic farmers of Konkan region of Maharashtra state

Abstract

The present study examines the family education status of organic farmers in the Konkan region of Maharashtra State. Education plays a crucial role in shaping farmers’ decision-making, adoption of organic practices, and access to information and institutional support. The study was conducted using a descriptive research design, with primary data collected from selected organic farming households through structured interviews. Educational status of family members was analyzed in terms of literacy level, formal schooling, and higher education attainment. The findings reveal that a majority of organic farming families possessed basic to secondary-level education, while a smaller proportion had members with higher or technical education. Educated family members were found to positively influence record keeping, awareness of organic certification, and participation in training programmes. However, constraints such as limited access to higher education institutions and economic factors were also observed. The study highlights the need for targeted educational and extension interventions to strengthen human capital among organic farming families in the Konkan region.
