Effect of sulphur and thiourea on growth and yield of mustard (Brassica juncea L.)

Abstract

A field experiment was carried out during the rabi season of 2024-25 at the Agricultural Research Farm, School of Agriculture, Suresh Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur (Rajasthan), to evaluate the “Effect of Sulphur and Thiourea on Growth and Yield of Mustard (Brassica juncea L.)”. The study was conducted using a factorial randomized block design with three replications. The experiment comprised four sulphur levels (0, 15, 30 and 45 kg ha⁻¹) and four thiourea foliar spray concentrations (0, 250, 500 and 750 ppm). The mustard variety Giriraj (DRMRIJ 31) was used for the investigation. The findings indicated that application of sulphur at 30 kg ha⁻¹ significantly enhanced plant height, dry matter accumulation (80 DAS and at harvest), chlorophyll content, number of siliquae per plant, number of seeds per siliqua, seed yield, stover yield and biological yield when compared with the control and the 15 kg ha⁻¹ sulphur level. The results also revealed that foliar application of thiourea at 500 ppm, closely followed by 750 ppm, significantly improved plant height, dry matter accumulation (80 DAS and at harvest), chlorophyll content, number of siliquae per plant, number of seeds per siliqua, seed yield, stover yield and biological yield.
