Phytochemical study of Leonotis nepetifolia

Abstract

Herbal medicine contains active compounds effective against various diseases, but proper knowledge is essential for preparing formulations to avoid damaging these compounds. Leonotis nepetifolia (L.) is native to tropical Africa and southern India and is known in South Africa and the West Indies as klip dagga, lion’s ear, Christmas, and candlesticks. The plant's roots are used to treat asthma, bronchitis, fever, and poisoning, while seeds treat burns, and the whole plant alleviates menstrual pain. This research examines morphological and microscopic traits, ash and extractive values, and phytochemical properties of root extracts. The study aims to establish standardization parameters for this plant, emphasizing its role in Ayurvedic formulations and herbal medication.
