A conceptual paper on financial technology (FinTech)
Abstract
The present conceptual paper examines the rapid emergence and evolution of Financial Technology (FinTech) as a transformative force in the global financial ecosystem. The main objective of the study is to explore the origins, key technological components, applications, opportunities, challenges, and future directions of the FinTech sector with special reference to developing economies. The paper adopts a descriptive and conceptual method based on secondary information drawn from academic literature, global reports, and institutional publications. By analysing technological advances such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data, cloud computing, and mobile applications, the study highlights how FinTech has improved financial accessibility, operational efficiency, and user‐centric service delivery. The results of the review indicate that FinTech drives financial inclusion, stimulates economic growth, and supports innovation-led financial services across banking, payments, lending, insurance, wealth management, and rural finance. However, risks associated with cybersecurity, regulatory uncertainties, and the digital divide continue to affect large-scale adoption. The findings also show that recent trends such as AI-driven decision-making, central bank digital currencies, blockchain-based solutions, and embedded finance will further expand the relevance of FinTech in future financial systems. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the need for coordinated approaches between governments, regulators, and financial institutions to ensure secure, inclusive, and sustainable FinTech development.
