Intercropping soybean varieties for improved growth traits and seed yield: A review of experimental results

Abstract

Intercropping, the practice of growing two or more crops in proximity, is gaining recognition for its potential to enhance the productivity of agricultural systems. This review focuses on the effect of intercropping soybean varieties, particularly with other crops, on growth traits and seed yield. Multiple studies have demonstrated that intercropping soybean with different companion crops can significantly improve its physiological characteristics, including plant height, pod number, and seed yield. Various soybean varieties exhibit different responses to intercropping systems, suggesting the importance of selecting appropriate varieties based on specific environmental conditions. The review synthesizes experimental results from a range of field trials, focusing on the benefits of intercropping in improving nutrient utilization, pest management, and overall crop yield. However, challenges such as competition for resources and variable outcomes depending on the intercropped species are also discussed. The role of intercropping in sustainable agriculture is emphasized, highlighting its potential to reduce reliance on chemical inputs while improving food security. The findings underscore the importance of understanding the interactions between different soybean varieties and their companion crops to optimize intercropping systems for higher productivity.
