Influence of diabetic neuropathy on sensory function and fall risk among elderly: A pilot study

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a growing global health concern, with diabetic neuropathy (DN) being one of its most prevalent and disabling complications. DN is associated with sensory impairments and increased fall risk, particularly among the elderly. However, limited data exist on the direct relationship between sensory deficits and fall risk in older adults with DN. Methods: This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Southern Karnataka, from July 2024 to May 2025. A total of 30 elderly individuals (≥65 years) with DM were included, divided into two groups: with DN (n=15) and without DN (n=15). Sensory function was assessed using the Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament (SWMF) test, and fall risk was evaluated with the Berg Balance Scale (BBS).
