The labour movement in Tata iron and steel company in the decade preceding the independence

Prabhat Kumar

Abstract

The labour movement in TISCO had a deep imprint of the nationalist movement. This was chiefly because the birth of trade union organisation in Jamshedpur was facilitated by the Calcutta Congress leaders. The close association of the trade union movement in Jamshedpur with the district Congress Committee continued throughout the early decades of the labour movement. This becomes all the more strong with the formation of the Congress ministry in Bihar. This period also sees the arrival in Jamshedpur of the speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Prof. Abdul Bari.
