Future of democracy in Rajasthan: Opportunities and challenges of social media politics

International Journal of Multidisciplinary Trends · 2025 · Vol. 7(8) · pp. 90–94

Abstract

This review article examines the transformative impact of social media on democratic processes in Rajasthan, analyzing both the opportunities for enhanced civic engagement and the challenges posed to electoral integrity. Drawing from recent developments in digital governance and social media policy initiatives in Rajasthan, this study explores how platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram have fundamentally altered political communication strategies, voter mobilization, and public discourse. The analysis reveals that while social media democratizes political participation and enables direct citizen-government engagement, it simultaneously presents significant challenges including misinformation propagation, digital divide implications, and algorithmic polarization effects. The Rajasthan government's pioneering social media policy of 2024-25, which engages influencers for welfare scheme promotion, exemplifies the state's strategic adaptation to digital democracy trends. This comprehensive review synthesizes contemporary research on digital political communication in India, focusing specifically on Rajasthan's unique position as a digitally transforming state, and provides evidence-based recommendations for sustainable democratic engagement in the social media era.
