Formulation and evaluation of Salvia officinalis emulgel for antioxidant activity: A promising candidate for wound healing

International Journal of Herbal Medicine · 2025 · Vol. 13(6) · pp. 07–11

Abstract

Topical medication systems offer a site - specific, non - invasive way to deliver therapeutic substances straight to the skin and underlying tissues. Emulgels, a combination of emulsion and gels, are particularly good at delivering hydrophilic and hydrophobic medications because they offer improved stability, better skin penetration, and prolonged release. Herbal medications are utilized extensively now - a - days because of their vast therapeutic potential, natural resource and low risk of adverse effects. They are important to both traditional and modern medicine. This study investigates the wound healing properties of an emulgel consisting the essential oil of Salvia officinalis as API. Sages’ potent anti - inflammatory, regenerative, and antioxidant qualities are attributed to its abundance of bioactive substances, including flavonoids, phenolic compounds and essential oils. The resulting emulgels physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity were assessed using a number of metrics. The evaluation studies were used to optimize the emulgel formulation. The physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity of the optimized formulation were compared with those of commercially available products. According to the findings, Salvia officinalis emulgel can be a promising natural substitute for topical wound treatment that offers patient - friendly application in addition to therapeutic efficacy.
