Prevalence and biochemical profiling of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from chicken in Anand, Gujarat
Abstract
Aims: The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in poultry meat sold at retail outlets in Anand, Gujarat, to assess its potential role as a source of contamination and foodborne illness. Study Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the occurrence of S. aureus in retail poultry meat samples. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in Anand, Gujarat. Sample collection and analysis were conducted over a defined study period. Methodology: A total of 150 raw poultry meat samples were collected from various retail outlets in Anand. Samples were examined using standard bacteriological methods. Identification of S. aureus was based on characteristic cultural growth, Gram staining, and biochemical tests including coagulase, methyl red, and Voges-Proskauer tests, all of which yielded positive results for confirmed isolates. Results: Out of 150 poultry meat samples, 58 (38.66%) were positive for S. aureus. The observed prevalence was consistent with findings from similar studies, although some variation was noted, likely due to differences in geographical location and detection methodologies. Conclusion: The results indicate that poultry meat sold at retail outlets in Anand is a potential source of S. aureus contamination. The study emphasizes the need for strict hygienic handling, regular microbiological monitoring, and improved food safety practices to protect consumer health.
