Performance assessment of surangi breed poultry for backyard rearing in Raebareli District, Uttar Pradesh
Abstract
Since ancient times backyard poultry farming has played an important role to meet the domestic as well as sociocultural needs of the rural people. However, the traditional poultry farming in villages has suffered in the wake of commercialization in the recent years. This study investigates the growth performance, egg production, survivability and adaptability of the Surangi breed when reared under backyard conditions in Raebareli district, Uttar Pradesh under BAIF Project. Over a 12?month observational period, parameters such as body weight, age at sexual maturity, egg yield, feed utilization, mortality, and farmer perceptions were recorded. Outcomes are compared with improved backyard breeds specifically CARI?Devendra and Vanaraja to evaluate relative merits and suitability for rural adoption.
