Assessment of blood and serum biochemical changes in bovine tropical theileriosis and their clinical significance

Abstract

The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the haemato-biochemical alterations associated with bovine tropical theileriosis in cattle presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex, College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Navania. The study focused on clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and current therapeutic approaches against the disease. A total of 40 cattle were examined, of which 30 were diagnosed with theileriosis and 10 clinically healthy cattle were included as controls. Among affected animals, 10 were treated with a single dose of buparvaquone injection along with supportive therapy for three consecutive days. The diagnosis of tropical theileriosis was based on characteristic clinical signs, microscopic examination of blood smears, and haemato-biochemical evaluation. Complete blood count (CBC) parameters included haemoglobin (Hb), total leukocyte count (TLC), differential leukocyte count (lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils), total erythrocyte count (TEC), packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC). Serum samples were subjected to biochemical analysis for serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), and total protein levels.
