Comparative evaluation of diagnostic techniques for Demodex mites in dogs

Abstract

This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of deep skin scraping, acetate tape impression, and trichography in 50 dogs showing clinical signs of canine demodicosis. Deep skin scraping detected Demodex mites in 28% of cases, making it the most sensitive technique. Acetate tape impression and trichography identified mites in 20% and 16% of cases, respectively. The findings reinforce deep skin scraping as the gold standard for diagnosing demodicosis, while highlighting the usefulness of acetate tape impression and trichography as supportive, non-invasive methods—particularly valuable in sensitive anatomical regions or for treatment monitoring. A combined, lesion-oriented diagnostic approach is recommended to enhance detection accuracy and improve overall clinical management.
