Uterine torsion in an amputated mongrel bitch and its surgical management

Abstract

An amputated pregnant Mongrel bitch aged around three years old was presented to the Department of Veterinary Gynecology and Obstetrics, Veterinary college, Hebbal, Bangalore with a history of anorexia and straining since three days, but unable to whelp. On pervaginal examination feathering reflex was present, no palpable fetal structure in the vaginal cavity and pet was observed with severe abdominal contractions. Upon clinical examination all the vital parameters are within the normal range. As it was unable to deliver the fetus pervaginally and as the pet was not intended for further breeding with the consent of the owner the pet was opted for En bloc. On exploration, cyanotic left gravid horn twisted in anticlockwise direction was noticed whereas, right gravid horn was normal. After exploratory laparotomy, the case was diagnosed as uterine torsion and uneventful recovery of the pet was seen after post operative care and management.
