Response of organic sources of phosphorus and sulphur on growth and yield of Taramira (Eruca sativa L.)

Abstract

The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the influence of organic sources of phosphorus and sulphur on the growth, yield and soil properties of taramira (Eruca sativa) at Organic Research Farm, Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Bundelkhand University, Kargua ji, Jhansi (U.P.) during Rabi season 2024-25. A field experiment comprising different organic treatment combinations was laid out and observations were recorded on agronomic and soil parameters. Taramira variety RTM-14 (Narendra Tara) was grown in randomized block design and replicated thrice. Organic nutrient management exerted a significant positive effect on crop growth. Treatments receiving combined organic inputs, particularly T7, produced the tallest plants (119.0 cm), highest chlorophyll content (2.73 mg/m²) and maximum test weight (3.78 g), indicating enhanced vegetative growth and photosynthetic activity. Yield attributes improved considerably under organic management, with T7 recording the highest seed yield (1502.1 kg/ha), stover yield (4587.5 kg/ha) and biological yield (6089.66 kg/ha). Soil physico-chemical properties also improved, as organic amendments lowered soil pH from 8.49 to near-neutral values (6.21-7.04), enhanced organic carbon content (0.57 mg/L C) and improved bulk density and pore space, thereby fostering better soil structure. Nutrient availability was markedly higher under organic inputs, with T7 showing maximum values for available nitrogen (136.48 kg/ha), phosphorus (20.2 kg/ha) and potassium (220.69 kg/ha). Overall, the study concludes that integrated organic sources of phosphorus and sulphur are effective in improving crop productivity& soil sustainability and therefore represent a viable approach for eco-friendly oilseed cultivation.
