Performance of okra varieties for growth, yield and quality
Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during the Zaid season of 2024-25 at the Departmental Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, to evaluate the performance of fifteen okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) genotypes for growth, yield, and quality traits. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design with three replications. Significant variation was observed among genotypes for growth parameters, phenological traits, and yield components. Arka Abhay exhibited the tallest plants, maximum number of leaves and branches, and highest fruit length and diameter. HRB-53 produced the heaviest fruits, while Kashi Pragati showed consistent performance for overall yield. Early-maturing genotypes, Pusa Makhamali and Arka Anamika, were suitable for short-duration cultivation and early market supply. Positive correlations were observed between vegetative growth traits and yield attributes, indicating the potential for selection of vigorous genotypes to enhance productivity. The results suggest that Arka Abhay, HRB-53, and Kashi Pragati are high-yielding and well-adapted genotypes for commercial cultivation in the Prayagraj region, providing a basis for future breeding and selection programs aimed at improving okra productivity and quality.
