Evaluation of nutrient uptake and economics in maize based intercropping systems for rabi in North coastal Andhra Pradesh

Abstract

A field experiment was carried out on sandy loam soils at Agricultural College Farm, Naira during rabi season, 2024-2025 in order to assess appropriate intercropping techniques for maize (Zea mays L.) in the North Coastal region of Andhra Pradesh. The experiment was laid out in split plot design in which maize was planted with three intercrops i.e., Blackgram, Greengram and Cowpea in paired rows, along with in-situ green manuring and farmers practice sole maize in main plots against three nitrogen levels in the sub plots in the split plot design. The experimental results have reveal that highest nutrient uptake in both kernel and stover was recorded with maize + in-situ green manuring with sunnhemp among the main plots, among subplots the highest nutrient uptake was recorded with application of 100% RDN. Maximum gross returns (Rs. 2,30,764 ha-1), net returns (Rs.1,68,307 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.69) was recorded in maize + greengram with paired row planting which was on par with maize + blackgram. Amongmaize based intercropping systems, application of 100% RDN had recorded highest gross returns (Rs. 2,11,519 ha-1), net returns (Rs. 1,51,285 ha-1) and B:C (2.50) among the nitrogen levels.
