The journey within: A critical study of Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s autobiographical works

International Journal of Research in English · 2025 · Vol. 7(1) · pp. 639–641

Abstract

In Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s autobiographical works, the journey within becomes the central focus, showing how she moves from silent acceptance to personal awakening. Her life reflects a deep struggle against systems shaped by patriarchy, religion, and culture, which often condition women to accept their roles without question. These forces, passed down through family, education, and tradition, blur the difference between personal choice and social pressure. However, Ali’s path—from her childhood in Somalia and other African countries to her life in the West—shows how inner reflection can lead to awareness and strength. Her writings reveal an emotional and intellectual process of self-discovery, where she challenges learned beliefs, faces personal pain, and gradually finds her voice to stand for justice and freedom.
